Saying “no”: easier said than done

March 10, 2010

I have taken up an interest in minimalism again and am trying to figure out how to integrate it into my family culture. If I were single, it would be quite easy for me to just sell or donate all of my things and start fresh; figure out what my basic needs were and go from there. But as a wife and mother, I can no longer act singularly. However, I am quite certain that a transition to a simpler lifestyle and perhaps even a minimalistic lifestyle would be of great benefit to us. Not sure if I could get the husband to accept this kind of lifestyle, but that’s why it’s a wish right?

So to answer Jamie‘s question this week–What do you wish to say no to?

I wish to say no to commercialism and consumerism; to distractions that keep me from working on my goals; to stuff just for the sake of stuff. By saying no to all of the extra, I am saying yes. Yes to more time, more freedom, more clarity in thought, more happiness. It’s easier said than done, but I hope to really make saying “no” a bigger part of my journey.

I hear you on this one! It’s so hard to cover one’s ears and chant “La, la, la, I can’t hear you!” when the Consumerism Choir shows up at our front door. As Alisha wishes for a minimalist lifestyle for herself and her family, so I wish for them also.

As Alisha wishes for herself so I wish for her also. Voluntary simplicity is so hard in our culture. Wishing you luck and peace with this wish. It can be done and the rewards are worth it.

I really respect that. It makes so much sense but can be such a challenge. Make sure to keep us updated on how this endeavor goes!

I always feel so light and free when I declutter and don’t buy stuff without thinking if I really need it and why I think I need it. As Alisha wishes for herself and her family, so I wish for them as well.

We try to be as minimal as possible, material wise… consumer wise. And you’re so right, if I were single it’d be way easier!! But the kids take “things” to a whole new level, and learning how to turn minimal “things” for them into a positive is tricky. But so worth it.

As you wish for yourself, I wish for you as well. May we all find simplicity that leads us to our deeper selves, more joy, and more hope.

I agree to the process of simplifying. As you wish for yourself, I wish for you too!

Simplifying is stinking rough. I am still trying to figure out how to get rid of all our baby items.

I am getting ready to simplify again. It seems that we simplify our lives and feel good about it, then gradually backslide into chaos again. Go minimal, you’ll enjoy it.
